This Easter Saturday, John Lawson is going to lead a club ride from Otematata, up above Benmore.
Saturday 30th March
Timaru – at the Wetlands Cafe on SH1 by Saltwater creek to carpool at 7:55am, leaving 8:05am.
Otematata – at the cafe at 10:00am
John Lawson, 021 395 221
The ride leaves the Lakes centre carpark (just off SH83) at 10am, we will ride the lakeside track and make our way up to the dam (great picture opportunity). We will cross the dam and then climb over the gate onto the Black Forest road. This climbs steeply above the dam to around 500m them drops down to the lake (can be slippery shingle and washed out in places) it then meanders up & down around Lake Benmore for about 9km and then a big climb up Sugar Loaf to around 900 metres. Its then turn around and blast back down the mountain and back to the dam. For those who want to enjoy the Benmore walking track we can do that on the way back to Ote. The track has a short steep climb but suberb views.
The entire ride would take around 3 hours but if you get tired then its just a matter of turning around and heading back, the masochists will catch you up.
Come prepared for alpine mountainbiking – plenty of fluids, energy bars and warm clothes just in case the weather changes. Also make sure the bike is up to it the steep climbing is hard on drivetrains.
Bring the camera as the views are too good to try and describe.
As always when in the outdoors, carry clothing for a change of weather. Make sure you have plenty of water and some real food to chew on.
See you there!
