Here are confirmed details for a club ride to do the Richmond Trail
beside Lake Tekapo. It is a DOC track along a glacial terrace, from
the Round Hill Skifield Rd. Exert from DOC:
Te Kahui Kaupeka
Conservation Park – Richmond Trail
Grade 4 Distance: 13 km one way / 26km return
Richmond Trail is a fantastic mountain bike ride and is part
of Te Araroa. The track starts at a signposted car park on
Roundhill Ski Area road. Ride 3 km up the gravel road to the start
of Richmond Trail which is well marked. The track meanders along
an old glacial terrace with stunning views of the surrounding
mountains and Lake Tekapo. The descent back down to Lilybank Road
is technical but these sections can be walked. The actual Richmond
Trail is 13 km long, however, for bikers to return to the car
park it is a distance of approximately 26 km.
Richmond Trail, east of Lake Tekapo.
Sunday 12th October, 10:30am at the END of the trail on Lillybank Rd
(we will ride up the road, so we finish with the downhill back to
Timaru – carpool at the SBS Events Centre carpark on Morgans Road at
8:30am, leaving at 8:45am. Drive time from Timaru is
about 1.5 hrs.

I have not done this ride before, but I am planning on doing it this
We will park at the south end where the trail spits us back out onto
Lillibank Road, and ride north along Lilliybank Rd, then up the
Roundhill Skifield road. Near the skifield, we hang a right onto
the trail and head south along a glacial terrace, then descend back
to the cars. Apparently there are some challenging bits on the
descent. The full loop is approx. 26km. Rated as Grade 4, so will
require some fitness and skill.
Ride time will be approximately 3hrs.
We will be high, and very exposed up there. Carry a rain coat and
warm clothing, as well as sunscreen. Make sure you have plenty of
water and some food to chew on.
See you there!
