Another Timaru 12hr race is done for the year and the SCMTB club was well represented, with 9 of the 18 Timaru teams having at least one or more of our members. Some of the male solo riders also came from the club.
An outstanding performance in the men’s 6hr solo by Kyle Wood posting consistent 20min(and some sub 20min) laps to secure him the win with17laps. He also came second overall beating all but one of the 6hr teams!!! other members competing well in the solo 6hr were – Kadin Morse with 14 laps, Russel Grant with 11 laps and Andrew McMillan with 6 laps.the winner of the female section was Kirsty Fogarty from chch with 12 laps.
In the 12hr solo Milan Brodina put in a fantastic effort, riding solidly with no rest stops and his partner Lucy, running thru the pits feeding him food one bite at a time. total of laps for Milan was 26. Another local rider doing it the hard way was Carl Finnagan, who was just hoping to complete 15 laps, came in with 20 laps completed and a funny looking walk. he doesn’t want to se a bike seat for quite sometime.
In the 6hr teams Craig Atwill & Emma Prestidge joined forces as Team 1 & a half to take out the mixed section with 15 laps and 5th overall. Team “Old Gits” Ken Dovestone & Nigel Plant went well with 13 laps.
In the 12hr section “Team Cyclery Racing” Thomas Prestidge, Logan Horn(chch),Cameron Fitzgerald, David Ashby-Coventry and the elder statesman, Simon Coventry had an excellent race coming in with a total of 34 laps for 2nd in the open men and 2nd over all only 1 lap off the category and overall winners ‘Cycleways’.
Team “just us” Grant Hannam, Lesley Davis, Tracey Howes & Richard Put rode well despite being down to only 3 members when Lesley had to pull out due to an injury obtained leading up to the race (apparently bathrooms can be very dangerous). However they did manage to obtain the services of Chris Thomas for a few laps (in between his race director duties), who, even with the pressure of having to fill Lesley’s shoes, beat his previous best time. Total number of laps completed was 21.
‘Parkside Peddlers’ Cam Dunnage, Kevin Johnston & Trevor Prattley completed 30 laps to take 4th place. Trevor polished his crashing skills when a rider walked out in front of him causing Trev to ‘T’bone the bike and leave a few red deposits about the place. Amazingly Trev picked himself up and carried on to still record a good time, all with out uttering a single expletive.
Tony & Connor Allnutt of “The Green St” team completed 26 laps and team “Blood, sweat & gears”, Malcolm Coates, Grant & William Shortus had a good ride to post 26 laps.
Our thoughts and best wishes for a full recovery must go out to those riders who were injured during the race – Tristan Williams who “KO’ed” himself going under the big tree at the walk bridge (apparently he wanted to continued once he finally woke up), Anton Cooper who aggravated a previous knee injury and to Bill Taine, who filled in for “Placemakers A2” only to fall from his bike half way thru and hurt his back when he landed on a rock. A replacement was found for Bill and unfortunately on their first lap got a double puncture, 1 front and one back. (A big thanks to Carl Finnagan, 12hr solo for loaning our secretary a tube to get home on).
There were excellent comments coming from all riders about the condition of the track, how fast it was and how much fun it was to ride. In fact the course was so fast that the best time this year was almost a full minute quicker that last year. So a big thanks and a pat on the back to all those who have helped make our tracks what they are.
Once again congratulations to all the club riders for an outstanding effort, well done!!
